Why ULC Certification Matters

ULC Is Not a Marketing Term — It Is an Insurance and Legal Requirement

Most Ontario insurance companies require ULC-certified alarm monitoring services to approve alarm-related discounts — which typically run 10–20% off your annual premium. Some commercial policies require ULC as a condition of coverage for theft and fire claims. Non-ULC monitoring may mean your claim gets denied.

Most Ontario insurance companies require ULC-certified monitoring to approve alarm-related discounts — which typically run 10–20% off your annual premium. Some commercial policies require ULC as a condition of coverage for theft and fire claims. Non-ULC monitoring may mean your claim gets denied.

United Protective operates exclusively through Grade A ULC-listed central stations across Ontario. We do not offer lower-tier monitoring options because the liability risk to your property is not worth the cost saving.

What does ULC certified monitoring actually mean?+
ULC (Underwriters Laboratories of Canada) is an independent certification body that audits alarm monitoring stations for response time, redundancy, staff training, and equipment. A ULC-certified station must pass annual third-party audits — it is not self-certified. Grade A is the highest ULC certification level.
Will ULC monitoring reduce my insurance premium?+
Most Ontario home and commercial insurers offer discounts of 10–20% on annual premiums for properties with ULC-certified alarm monitoring. Some commercial policies require ULC monitoring as a condition of theft and fire coverage. Contact your insurer with your ULC certificate number — we provide this with every monitoring plan.
How does ULC monitoring respond to an alarm?+
When your alarm triggers, the signal reaches our ULC central station in seconds. A trained operator verifies the alarm (calls your property, checks video if available), then dispatches police, fire, or medical services as appropriate. Your emergency contact list is notified simultaneously. The entire process is logged with timestamps.
What happens if I trigger the alarm accidentally?+
The operator will call your property first. If you answer and provide your verbal passcode, the alarm is cancelled and no dispatch takes place. False alarms are logged but the first one or two are typically waived. Repeated false alarms may result in a municipality charge, which is why we include passcode setup and system testing during installation.
Can I switch my monitoring from another company?+
Yes. In most cases your existing panel and sensors can be reprogrammed to our ULC central station without replacing any equipment. We review your current system during a free assessment and advise on compatibility. If you are in a contract with another provider, review your cancellation terms — we can advise on timing.
Are there lock-in contracts for monitoring?+
No. United Protective monitoring plans are month-to-month with no minimum term. We believe the quality of our service should keep you — not contract penalties. You can cancel at any time with 30 days written notice.
